An engineer by training, I built Le Papayer deep in Casamance, where there is no grid at all — no running water, no mains electricity — and I had to relearn almost everything in the field. It all started with water, by rope and pulley, before electricity: it is this order, dictated by the place, that shaped all the autonomy that followed.
This account candidly recounts the trial and error as much as the successes — the start-up surge that can wreck a solar installation, an architecture thought through link by link, a year of testing. In it, I also dismantle the easy promises of '100%' or '−80%', and explain my one rule: set aside very high-power appliances. Ultimately, autonomy is not a recipe you apply, but something you reinvent in contact with a preserved nature that has the last word.

An incredible ecolodge in Casamance!
An incredible place! A magnificent ecolodge in Cap Skirring nestled in a lush garden. The ocean waves quickly send you off to sleep in the evening, and the delightful chirping of the birds wakes you enchantingly.
Laurent spoiled us and showed us an animist village and its fetishes, let us climb a sacred tree to admire Casamance from 25 m up, watch manatees beneath the coconut palms and explore the mangrove aboard a pirogue, discovering the pure nature of Casamance.
The team looked after us wonderfully. Assan is extremely kind, Sophie sparkles with generosity, as do her little dishes, and Fatou carefully keeps the place spotless.
Not forgetting Papaye, Léa, Terrible and the other four-legged companions who add a very pleasant extra liveliness.

A place Laurent has made ideal for an African getaway: a magnificent, flower-filled and peaceful refuge overlooking a vast beach, both reassuring and very open to its surroundings.

A memorable excursion in the bolongs!
We stayed at Le Papayer Ecolodge hotel Cap Skirring in November 2018. Our stay was incredible! The Papayer Ecolodge team knows the region very well. Assan took us out in a 4x4 for an amazing day in Mlomp and at Pointe Saint Georges. This day trip was definitely the highlight of our stay in Casamance.
I strongly recommend staying with them if you visit Casamance and want to discover more than just Cap Skirring (there is so much more to learn in the region!). Beyond that, Fanta and Assan are so kind and interesting to get to know! And Fanta is an excellent cook! We couldn't have enjoyed Casamance without their company!

A little paradise facing the ocean!
I loved spending three weeks at Le Papayer Ecolodge: it's the ideal place for anyone who, like me, seeks calm and tranquillity. That said, the village of Cap Skirring is seven kilometres away and I made sure to go whenever I felt the need for a little liveliness, or to shop at the market.
The camp is a hundred metres from the beach, which is practically deserted, while behind it there are rice paddies and a little forest full of birds of every kind, which I could easily watch with the binoculars I had the good sense to bring along... All in all, I consider Le Papayer Ecolodge hotel in Cap Skirring a little paradise.

A wild place full of charm!
I had an excellent stay at Le Papayer Ecolodge, a wild place without being cut off from the world: the beach a stone's throw away, the rice paddies (not a single mosquito this season), and even the forest nearby, all close to the village of Cap Skirring. As I love to paint, I was able, among other things, to devote myself to my passion in complete freedom.
The team was very attentive without being intrusive (the fish caught that very morning were deliciously cooked by Fanta), and I warmly recommend Le Papayer Ecolodge hotel in Cap Skirring, Casamance to anyone who loves nature by the ocean in Senegal.
